The National Transportation Safety Board is leading an investigation into the cause of a small plane crash that struck a house in northeast Ohio on Thursday, resulting in a fiery explosion that claimed the lives of both individuals on board.
Crash Details
The white and blue Piper PA-28-180 departed from Akron Fulton Airport at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, according to flight logs. The aircraft remained airborne for about an hour before crashing into a residential area and catching fire. Witnesses at the nearby Firestone Country Club first reported the incident, and dark black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky near the crash site.
Emergency Response
The Akron Fire Department confirmed that the house that was hit, along with a second home, had to be evacuated due to the fire. Fortunately, no occupants of the homes or bystanders sustained injuries.
The Summit County Medical Examiner's office stated on Friday that authorities have not yet identified the bodies of the two deceased individuals or notified their families.
Investigation Underway
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is assisting the NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration in the review. In a statement, the Highway Patrol noted that investigators are continuing to analyze flight data, witness statements, and aircraft records to determine the sequence of events. The NTSB has scheduled an update for Friday afternoon.
Community Response
The American Winds College of Aeronautics, located nearby, reassured staff, students, and families via Facebook late Wednesday that all of its aircraft were safe. Denise Hobart of the North East Ohio Pilots Association, speaking on behalf of the school, expressed prayers for the pilot, any passengers, and their families.
