New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing serious criminal charges following allegations from his personal chef that he assaulted her at his home near Boston. The 32-year-old football star, who is in a relationship with rapper Cardi B, has categorically denied the claims, while the Patriots organisation has stated it is standing by its player.
The Alleged Incident and Police Report
According to an incident report provided to authorities in Dedham, Massachusetts, the alleged assault took place on December 2. The chef reported that Diggs entered her unlocked bedroom during a dispute over unpaid wages, grabbed her from behind, and "tried to choke her using the crook of his elbow around her neck." She told police she feared she "could have blacked out" before being thrown onto a bed.
The accuser initially hesitated to identify Diggs to officers "due to his fame," the report states. She began working for the NFL player around July 20, with employment intended to last through the current season. Friction arose when agreed weekly wire transfers became monthly payments. She also claims she is still owed a month's salary and was not compensated for a week in early November when Diggs asked her to leave the property so he could entertain guests.
Legal Proceedings and Team Response
Diggs has been charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery. His legal team, including attorney David Meier, has called the claims "unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated - because they did not occur." Another defence lawyer, Michael DiStefano, revealed in Dedham District Court that a financial settlement has been offered to the accuser, whose identity remains private.
The Patriots issued a firm statement of support. "Stefon has informed the organisation that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon," the team said, adding they would cooperate with authorities and the NFL. The league confirmed it is aware of the matter and in contact with the club. Diggs is scheduled for arraignment on January 23, just days before the AFC Championship game. His playing status for the final regular season game remains unchanged.
Dave Portnoy's Controversial Defence
Barstool Sports founder and lifelong Patriots fan Dave Portnoy vigorously defended Diggs in a social media video. He repeatedly emphasised the principle of "innocent until proven guilty" and linked the Patriots' decision to support the player to the team's "moral integrity." Portnoy pointed to the franchise's past swift release of Aaron Hernandez following murder accusations as evidence of their high standards.
In a contentious segment, Portnoy suggested that people without personal chefs should not comment on the case, questioning the timeline of the wage dispute. "I find it peculiar that a personal chef can have all of these back wages owed and still be cooking," he argued. He concluded by hoping the situation was "a bunch of malarkey" for everyone involved.
The case unfolds as Diggs, who recently welcomed a child with Cardi B, and the Patriots have secured a playoff berth. The organisation and the NFL have stated they will continue to monitor the legal process closely.
