Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the appointment of Manchester City executive Carlos Raphael Moersen as their new head of football operations. The north London club have turned once again to the City Football Group (CFG) for a key backroom hire, following a difficult start to the season under manager Thomas Frank.
Moersen has spent a decade with CFG, initially working for New York City FC before moving to Manchester as part of their commercial team. He began handling contracts and transfers for the group five years ago and stepped up his role with City in 2024 after chief operating officer Omar Berrada departed for Manchester United. He continued under new sporting director Hugo Viana but is now set to take on a bigger role at Spurs, according to the Athletic.
The move is not yet finalised, and it remains to be seen how City will replace Moersen, though they have a history of promoting from within. Tottenham have previously looked to CFG for appointments: Ange Postecoglou earned a move to Celtic after coaching Yokohama F Marinos, part-owned by City's parent company, while Scott Munn was made chief football officer at Spurs in 2023 after working for CFG in China and Australia. Both Postecoglou and Munn were dismissed last summer, with Frank arriving as manager and a director of football operations role left vacant until now.
Spurs’ season has soured since a 2-0 win at the Etihad in August. Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest leaves them 11th in the Premier League table, with poor home performances and growing discontent among supporters. City will travel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the reverse fixture on February 1, aiming to secure their first win at the ground in 2024.
