Spirit beat Thorns 2-0 to reach NWSL final

The Washington Spirit are through to the National Women's Soccer League championship final after a commanding 2-0 victory over the Portland Thorns in a tense semi-final clash on Saturday.

A sell-out crowd of 19,365 fans at Audi Field in Washington DC witnessed the home side book their ticket to a second consecutive final, where they will face the winner of the Gotham FC versus Orlando Pride semi-final.

Match-Winning Goals Seal the Deal

The Spirit's opening goal was a masterpiece of counter-attacking football. In the 27th minute, from a Portland corner, Rosemounde Kouassi embarked on a spectacular 80-yard sprint. She then unselfishly laid the ball off for Gift Monday to tap in from close range, marking the sixth time this season the duo have combined for a goal.

Portland's goalkeeper, Mackenzie Arnold, put on a heroic display to keep her team in contention, making six crucial saves, including two stunning back-to-back stops in the 56th and 57th minutes.

The victory was sealed in the 83rd minute by midfielder Croix Bethune. The 24-year-old broke free, expertly rounded the onrushing Arnold, and calmly slotted the ball into an empty net to send the home supporters into raptures.

Rodman's Return Adds Off-Field Drama

The match was also notable for the late return of US women's national team star Trinity Rodman. The 23-year-old forward, who had been sidelined with a knee injury, came on as a 90th-minute substitute to a thunderous ovation.

Her appearance, however, was clouded by significant uncertainty about her future. Rodman is out of contract next month, and according to reports from ESPN, has been considering substantially higher offers from European clubs.

NWSL teams are constrained by a $3.5m salary cap, limiting what Washington can offer to retain their marquee player. Negotiations have reportedly stalled, making this potentially Rodman's final home appearance for the Spirit.

Historic Achievement for Washington

This victory marks the fourth championship appearance in the history of the Washington Spirit. Having been defeated 1-0 by the Pride in last year's final, the team will be eager to go one better next weekend in San Jose, California.

The club continues to demonstrate its strong fanbase, with this match representing the fourth consecutive playoff sell-out for the Spirit, underscoring the growing popularity of women's football.
