Gareth Southgate is reportedly open to taking the Manchester United job if Ruben Amorim is sacked, but would demand assurances over sufficient time to rebuild the club. According to The Sun, the former England manager believes it could take up to four years to restore United as Premier League title contenders.
Amorim is under mounting pressure after taking just 33 points from 34 games and failing to win back-to-back matches. The board still backs him but a shortlist of replacements has been drawn up, including Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola.
Southgate has been out of management since leaving England after Euro 2024. He was previously considered for the United job before Amorim's appointment, with then-sporting director Dan Ashworth endorsing Southgate, only to be overruled by chief executive Omar Berrada.
United have spent over £60m on payouts to sacked managers since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement. Southgate, 55, last managed at club level with Middlesbrough in 2009 but is confident a gradual improvement plan is the key to success.
United face Sunderland on Saturday before a trip to Anfield in October. Club legend Wayne Rooney expressed doubt about Amorim's future, stating he has 'no faith' in the current direction and calling for 'big changes'.
