Southampton staged a remarkable late comeback to defeat Wrexham 2-1 in an EFL Cup thriller at St Mary's, with two goals in the final nine minutes securing a first home league victory since November. The match marked Wrexham's return to this level for the first time since 1982, following their rise from non-league under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Wrexham took the lead in the first half through a Josh Windass penalty, awarded after Ronnie Edwards fouled Kieffer Moore. Despite Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson arguing Edwards should have been sent off, the defender escaped without a booking. Windass also hit the bar before scoring, as the visitors dominated much of the game.
Southampton pushed for an equaliser, with 18-year-old Jay Robinson hitting the post in first-half stoppage time. The introduction of Mateus Fernandes on the hour helped the hosts gain momentum, while Moore's departure with an ankle injury early in the second half hampered Wrexham. The visitors missed chances to double their lead, with Lewis O'Brien and Ryan Hardie both coming close.
Ryan Manning levelled the scores with a superb free-kick from 25 yards in the 81st minute. Then, in the 87th minute, Manning chested down a diagonal pass from Shea Charles, teeing up Damion Downs. The forward's shot was saved, but captain Jack Stephens was on hand to score the winner from close range, sparking emotional celebrations.
Parkinson remained positive despite the defeat, praising his side's performance. 'It was a very proud day for the club, playing at this level and there were a lot of positives,' he said. The result gave Southampton their first win under manager Will Still, who at 32 is the youngest manager in the English Football League.
