Southampton Shocks Fulham In Fa Cup With Late Penalty

Southampton secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round, with Ross Stewart converting a stoppage-time penalty to send the visitors into the quarter-finals. The win extended Southampton's unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions and was widely regarded as deserved, with the Championship side outplaying their Premier League hosts for large periods.

Fulham made nine changes to their starting lineup following a midweek defeat to West Ham, a decision that drew criticism after a disjointed performance. Manager Marco Silva admitted his side lacked urgency and mentality, saying: 'It is not just another defeat. We lost a big chance. If you want to be in a club that wants to get better your ambition has to always be there.'

The first half saw Southampton create the best chance when Léo Scienza raced through on goal but shot wide. Fulham dominated possession but struggled to break down a resilient Southampton defence. The hosts had a goal disallowed in bizarre circumstances when Daniel Peretz's quick goal-kick hit Ryan Manning, but referee Jarred Gillett had already blown his whistle.

In the second half, Rodrigo Muniz headed over and Timothy Castagne had a goal ruled out for offside. Southampton grew in confidence, with Tom Fellows forcing a save from Benjamin Lecomte. The decisive moment came in stoppage time when Lecomte's poor clearance was headed back into the box, Stewart found Finn Azaz, and Joachim Andersen fouled the midfielder. Stewart stepped up to convert the penalty, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling fans.

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert praised his side's resilience: 'It's very important, if you get that taste of how to win games, that you stay on the gas. We didn't give Fulham too much today. It's a deserved win.'
