Cameroon secured a 2-1 victory over South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations last-16 tie in Rabat, advancing to the quarter-finals. Goals from Junior Tchamadeu and Christian Kofane proved decisive, despite a late scare from substitute Evidence Makgopa.
The match was played at a high tempo, with South Africa boss Hugo Broos facing his former employers. The deadlock was broken just after the half-hour mark when Tchamadeu swept home from a corner that South Africa failed to clear. Two minutes into the second half, Kofane doubled the lead with a header from a superb cross by Aboubakar Nagida.
South Africa struggled to respond until the dying embers, when Makgopa turned home a cross from Modiba in the 88th minute. However, it was too little, too late for Bafana Bafana, who exit at the last-16 stage for the second consecutive edition after losing to Nigeria in the previous tournament.
Cameroon held on through five added minutes, with South Africa pushing for an equaliser. Mokoena won a free kick in the 94th minute, but Mbule's delivery was headed behind. The Indomitable Lions will now face an opponent to be determined in the quarter-finals.
