Trailblazing British Jockey Sophie Doyle Retires After US Success

Sophie Doyle, the pioneering British jockey who enjoyed her greatest successes in the United States, has announced her retirement from the saddle. The 38-year-old, daughter of former trainer Jacquie and sister of top jockey James, made the announcement on Thanksgiving Day, four days after riding her latest winner at Churchill Downs.

Doyle relocated to the US in 2013 after establishing herself as one of the leading female Flat jockeys in Britain. Across the Atlantic, she recorded three of her five graded race victories on Street Band, including the Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes, and rode at three Breeders' Cups. Her 478th and final US winner came on Sunday at Churchill Downs aboard Joejoe Go, trained by her husband Christopher Davis.

In a Facebook post, Doyle expressed gratitude for her career, which she said had blessed her with 'incredible experiences across the globe.' She thanked her mother Jacqueline for being her 'rock and guiding light,' and the late trainer Larry Demeritte for providing her first winner at Churchill Downs and a place to live. 'If it wasn't for Larry, I'm not sure I would have gotten to where I did,' she wrote.

Doyle also paid tribute to the mares who gave her memorable days, including Street Band, Fioretti, and Awesome Treat. She noted the symmetry of her career, with her first winner on JazNtap and her last on JoeJoe Go both occurring at Churchill Downs. Doyle, who has a young daughter named Emilie, now steps away from the sport after a trailblazing journey from Britain to the top of American racing.
