Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has emerged as a potential candidate for the Manchester United job following the collapse of his aspirations to manage Norway. The former United striker is being discussed as a possible interim manager after Ruben Amorim was sacked on Monday morning.
An official club statement confirmed Amorim's departure, saying: 'Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May. With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.'
Darren Fletcher will oversee United's fixture against Burnley on Wednesday, but the club is considering a more experienced interim manager for the remainder of the season. Michael Carrick and Solskjaer are among those being discussed. Solskjaer, who was dismissed by United three years ago, has a proven track record at the club, having secured sixth, third and second-place league finishes during his tenure.
Solskjaer recently left Besiktas and would be available to return to Old Trafford in a temporary capacity. Former teammate Ronny Johnsen said: 'It is logical that his name comes up in the discussion. He has experience with the club and knows the culture.' However, ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt expressed surprise, saying: 'It would be unusual for a club like Manchester United... I would be very surprised if Ole Gunnar returns.'
This development follows Solskjaer's disappointment after Ståle Solbakken extended his contract as Norway manager until 2028. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is tipped as the next permanent United boss, while other candidates include Enzo Maresca, Andoni Iraola, Zinedine Zidane, Xavi, and Gareth Southgate.
