Exclusive: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in Shock Manchester United Interim Manager Talks
Solskjaer could make shock Man Utd return as interim boss

Manchester United are considering a sensational move to bring former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back to the club in an interim capacity, according to reports emerging from Old Trafford.

Wilcox Leads Push for Fan Favourite

The club's director of football, Jason Wilcox, is understood to view the Norwegian legend as a prime candidate to take temporary charge. Wilcox, alongside chief executive Omar Berrada, believes Solskjaer could provide an immediate positive impact on results and help restore a feelgood factor at the club.

Solskjaer, who was sacked by Besiktas in August 2024, is thought to be open to the prospect of a dramatic return. He remains a hugely popular figure with supporters due to his storied history as a player, most notably scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final.

Senior Squad Backs Potential Appointment

The potential interim appointment is reportedly welcomed by key senior figures in the dressing room, including captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Harry Maguire. This internal support is seen as a significant factor in the deliberations.

Solskjaer's previous tenure at the helm provides a ready-made understanding of the club's unique pressures. He initially took over as caretaker manager in December 2018 following the dismissal of José Mourinho. His successful stint, which sparked a notable upturn in form, led to him being appointed permanent manager in March 2019.

Previous Tenure and Other Candidates

During his near three-year spell in permanent charge, Solskjaer guided United to consecutive top-three Premier League finishes in 2020 and 2021. He also led the team to the 2021 Europa League final, where they were defeated on penalties by Villarreal. However, a severe downturn in form the following season resulted in his dismissal in November 2021 with the team in seventh place.

Other names are also in the frame for the temporary role. Michael Carrick, another former United midfielder, is under consideration. Carrick, who is currently out of work, previously served as caretaker for three games in late 2021 following Solskjaer's departure, winning two and drawing one.

The current interim head coach, Darren Fletcher, who will take charge for the first time in the match against Burnley, is also a candidate to see out the season. The club's hierarchy is weighing up all options as they seek stability before making a long-term appointment.
