Arne Slot Issues Stern Warning Over Mo Salah's Liverpool Departure
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has delivered a passionate response to the ongoing speculation surrounding Mohamed Salah's decision to leave the club at the end of the season. In a detailed press conference ahead of Liverpool's FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City, Slot firmly denied any regrets about his handling of the highly publicised fallout with the Egyptian forward earlier in the campaign.
Public Fallout and Reconciliation
The rift between Slot and Salah became evident in December when Salah, after being benched for three consecutive matches, publicly criticised his manager, claiming Slot had 'thrown me under the bus' by attributing the team's poor form to his performances. At the time, Salah stated there was 'no relationship' between them and suggested 'someone doesn’t want me in the club'. However, the pair eventually reconciled, with Salah returning to the starting lineup, and Slot remains adamant that he managed the situation as effectively as possible.
Slot emphasised, 'I look back at this season thinking that I made a few decisions that could have been better, but I’m not talking about this specific thing with Mo. I don't regret many things I did during a little longer than one-and-a-half years together.'
Challenging Assumptions About Salah's Exit
Addressing the widespread assumption that Salah's departure is directly linked to his reduced playing time under Slot, the manager urged caution. He pointed to historical precedent, noting that Salah did not leave Liverpool after being benched by former manager Jurgen Klopp in a match against West Ham in 2024. 'The assumption is that if you don’t play in these games and all of a sudden wants to leave, it is an assumption and maybe it is true or maybe it isn’t,' Slot explained. 'But history has shown is that he did not do that previously and had a great season after that.'
Slot also hinted that private discussions involving Salah, his agent, and the club preceded the public announcement, suggesting there are undisclosed factors at play. 'When things like this are announced to the outside world, I don't think it's a surprise for you to hear that there are a lot of discussions, talks going on between him, his agent, the club, me and him, before this comes out in the public,' he revealed.
Respecting Salah's Legacy and Decision
The manager defended Salah's right to make his own choices, acknowledging the forward's immense contributions to Liverpool. 'I think Mo has earned the right completely to decide whenever he thinks he should leave. And he's done so many things for this club. He has to make up his own mind and that's what he did,' Slot stated. He further dismissed the notion that the incident at Leeds, where Salah was sidelined, was the sole catalyst for the exit, noting that Salah played every game upon returning from the AFCON tournament.
Slot concluded with a direct warning about the nature of rumours surrounding Liverpool, saying, 'I hear a lot being said about Liverpool, and one of the funny things about Liverpool is that almost everything that is out there is not true.' He added, 'I would not go into all these assumptions, and I would be, how do you say this in English? I would be careful with assumptions, yes.'
As Salah prepares to depart after a challenging season, Slot's comments underscore the complexity behind high-profile football exits and the need for measured interpretation in the face of rampant speculation.
