Liverpool's head coach Arne Slot has underlined the critical importance of securing a top-eight finish in the Champions League following his side's emphatic 3-0 victory away to Marseille on Wednesday evening.
A Convincing European Display
The Reds delivered a commanding performance at the Stade Vélodrome, marking only the second occasion this season they have defeated a top-tier opponent by a three-goal margin. The comprehensive win, achieved through a Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick, an unfortunate own goal from Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, and a late strike from Cody Gakpo, has significantly bolstered their European prospects.
Climbing the Standings
This crucial result propelled Liverpool into fourth position in their Champions League group, now sitting two points clear of ninth-placed Barcelona. With a final group stage fixture against Qarabag at Anfield scheduled for next week, the Merseyside club are firmly focused on avoiding the play-off round and securing direct qualification for the competition's last sixteen.
"It's very important because we have had to play with the same players because of injuries for most of the season," explained Slot, whose team extended their unbeaten run to an impressive thirteen matches – currently the best such record across Europe's top-five leagues.
Overcoming Adversity
The Dutch manager highlighted the physical and mental resilience of his squad amidst a challenging campaign. "I don't think Virgil (van Dijk) has had more than three days off, the same for Ryan (Gravenberch) and others but they constantly show up no matter how many setbacks we've had this season," he noted, suggesting fatigue has occasionally been a factor in conceding goals.
Slot also paid tribute to the formidable atmosphere and quality faced in Marseille. "It's always very difficult to play Marseille because of their passionate fans and the quality of their players, but what makes it even harder is the quality of their manager," he said, referencing opposite number Roberto De Zerbi.
Key Moments and Clinical Edge
Analysing the match, Slot pointed to a pivotal shift in fortune. "On the ball we were controlled but what made the difference this time was that after we had a big chance and hit the post, they had a big chance and put it over: usually this season that goes in," he observed. "But we were able to make it 2-0, 3-0 and so that makes the perception of the game completely different."
He contrasted the efficiency in front of goal with their recent domestic draw, stating, "Against Burnley (Saturday's 1-1 draw) we created three or four times more than we did tonight but tonight we scored three."
Salah's Professional Return
The match also signalled the return of star forward Mohamed Salah, who rejoined the squad after a month away at the Africa Cup of Nations. His comeback followed recent public comments regarding feeling "thrown under the bus" during a dip in form.
Slot praised the Egyptian's professionalism, saying, "It says a lot about how big a professional he is that he can be away for more than a month with a different team and be so fit to play 90 for us after one day's training. He was so close to a goal, it would usually be a goal from him, but it didn't harm us because we scored three."
De Zerbi's Disappointment
In contrast, Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi was left frustrated by his team's display. "We played poorly, conceding a silly goal before half-time," he admitted. "We lost possession too often in the middle because we misunderstood the game, we misjudged their pressing. We had a few chances that we didn't manage well. We still have too many ups and downs in our matches."
As the Champions League group stage reaches its climax, Liverpool's decisive victory in France has placed their destiny firmly in their own hands as they pursue a coveted top-eight finish and a smoother path into the knockout rounds.
