Arne Slot Stands Firm on Mohamed Salah Departure

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has firmly stated that he harbours no regrets over his handling of Mohamed Salah, as the Egyptian forward prepares to depart Anfield on a free transfer. Salah's exit, announced last week, has been widely linked to a reported fallout with Slot, but the Dutch coach remains unapologetic about his decisions.

Salah's Farewell Tour Begins

Mohamed Salah will commence his farewell tour with Liverpool in an FA Cup quarter-final clash against Manchester City this Saturday. The 33-year-old has terminated the final season of his contract, which was worth £400,000 per week over two years, opting to leave just 12 months after signing the lucrative deal. Many observers have pointed to a public disagreement with Slot, where Salah notably claimed the pair had 'no relationship', as a key factor in his decision to move on.

Slot's Unwavering Stance

When questioned about whether he was content with his actions in the situation, Slot responded emphatically: 'Yes. I look back at this season thinking that I made a few decisions that could have been better but I’m not talking about this specific thing with Mo.' He elaborated further, dismissing assumptions that Salah's reduced playing time directly led to his departure. 'I don't regret many things I did during a little longer than one-and-a-half years together. Again, the assumption that if he's not playing that he wants to leave – that's the assumption being made – then he would have left one-and-a-half years ago.'

Slot referenced a previous incident under former manager Jurgen Klopp, where Salah was omitted from the lineup for a match against West Ham but did not seek an exit. 'I can remember West Ham away when he wasn't playing. I wasn't there. He didn’t decide to leave. The assumption is if you don’t play these games and all of a sudden want to leave, it is an assumption and maybe it is true or maybe it isn’t. But history has shown that he did not do that previously and had a great season after that.'

Planning for Life After Salah

With Liverpool also facing a crucial Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain in France this week, Slot confirmed that succession planning is already underway. He admitted that replacing a player of Salah's calibre will be an immense challenge. 'We are not starting to work on it now because we are constantly working on where we can improve,' said the head coach. He highlighted the potential of current squad members, noting: 'There is not a lot talked about this but it is 88 minutes that Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz were together on the pitch together. So let’s first find out and work out how that works together and that can give us so much more.'

Slot emphasised Salah's unique status, stating: 'It is never one player who can replace Mo. Otherwise there would be 15 or 20 Mos and he is one of a kind, which is why he is so special. You cannot find a Mo replacement. Maybe you can but he would not be available to buy at a realistic fee.' This underscores the significant void that Salah's departure will leave at Liverpool, as the club navigates a transitional period under Slot's leadership.
