Fans of the BBC crime drama Shetland have received an exciting update regarding the upcoming 11th season. The show's director, Ruth Carney, confirmed via Instagram on Sunday, May 31, that the first block of filming has officially wrapped.
Filming Progress
Carney shared behind-the-scenes photographs from the set and expressed gratitude to the cast and crew. She wrote: "That's a wrap on Block One of Shetland. Thanks to all the incredible cast and crew who have worked tirelessly." She also thanked her "A Team" and added: "I'm looking forward to getting back into the saddle to direct Ep 6 in Block Two."
The 10th season concluded in December 2025, and the BBC announced shortly after that production for the new series had begun. Filming is taking place across Scotland and the Shetland Isles, with new episodes expected to air on BBC One and iPlayer later this year.
Cast and Characters
Returning cast members include Ashley Jensen as DI Ruth Calder and Alison O'Donnell as DI Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh. Other regulars such as Steven Robertson, Lewis Howden, and Samuel Anderson are also back. The season will consist of six episodes.
Guest stars include John Wark, Jude Bain, Robin Weaver, John McLarnon, Beth Marshall, Daniel Boyd, Charlene Boyd, and Helen Mackay, among others.
Plot Synopsis
The official synopsis reveals: "When a car is pulled from the water, a grim discovery is made - crammed in the boot are the decomposed, skeletal remains of an unknown male." The team investigates the vehicle's owner, a respected local GP who left the Isles under a cloud of troubled rumours nine years ago. As Calder and Tosh dig deeper, they uncover dark secrets in their quest for the truth.
Shetland remains one of the BBC's most-watched dramas, ranking in the top five in 2025 and holding the number one spot in Scotland.
