Sheffield United have sacked manager Ruben Selles after just six matches in charge and reappointed Chris Wilder for a third stint as manager. The decision comes after a disastrous start to the Championship season, with the club rooted to the bottom of the table following a 5-0 defeat to Ipswich Town.
Wilder, 57, was dismissed in June after the Blades' play-off final defeat to Sunderland. The club then appointed Selles, formerly of Hull and Reading, but he lost all five Championship matches and one Carabao Cup tie. The board cited a need for stability and a return to proven leadership.
In a statement, Sheffield United said: 'Following a difficult start to the season, the board felt it necessary to make a change in order to stabilise performances and strengthen our push for promotion. Chris Wilder returns with proven leadership and an unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United.'
Wilder has signed a contract until June 2027 and will take charge of the next match against Charlton Athletic. The club thanked Selles for his professionalism but accepted responsibility for the poor results.
