Alan Shearer has stated he does not believe Newcastle United should have been awarded a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Manchester City. Anthony Gordon won a spot-kick after being judged to have been fouled by City goalkeeper Ederson at St James' Park.
Speaking on Premier League Live, the former England captain said: 'I didn't think it was a penalty. Gordon has taken a heavy touch and he's never getting anywhere near that ball and he realises. If there's a touch it's a tiny touch and he initiates the touch. I think Newcastle got really lucky.'
Shearer added that Gordon deliberately sought contact after a poor touch. 'His touch is awful and once he knows he can't get his touch, his second thought is how do I try and get a penalty. So many players do it.'
The decision drew comparisons to a penalty Liverpool's Diogo Jota won against Newcastle last season, which Shearer had previously criticised. When a fan asked for his view on the Gordon incident, Shearer replied: 'I didn't think it was a pen. That ok?'
The Premier League's Match Centre confirmed that VAR checked and upheld the referee's decision, including the yellow card for Ederson, deeming it a genuine attempt to play the ball.
