Shaun Murphy: Ebdon 'Needs a Medic Backstage' During Games

Shaun Murphy has revealed how Peter Ebdon's guidance has been instrumental in his remarkable World Snooker Championship campaign. The 43-year-old, known as 'The Magician', faces Wu Yize in the final at the Crucible across Sunday and Monday, aiming to secure his second world title since his 2005 triumph.

Murphy's Stellar Form

Murphy has been in sensational form in Sheffield over the past fortnight, defeating Fan Zhengyi, Xiao Guodong, Zhao Xintong, and John Higgins to reach the showpiece event. He first enlisted Ebdon in 2024 seeking a fresh spark, and their partnership has flourished ever since.

Ebdon's Impact Behind the Scenes

Reflecting on their collaboration, Murphy told Metro: "I feel like Peter Ebdon has stripped me back to brick in a very short space of time. He saw through some of the outer shell and into my soul and has stripped me of all my defences and got right to the heart of the issue very quickly." The partnership has yielded results faster than anticipated, with Murphy noting there is "plenty of room in my trophy cabinet."

Murphy highlighted how Ebdon's experience as a former world champion resonates during intense matches. "He appreciates just how hard it is. He might applaud or shout for something that perhaps is unseen to others. He knows exactly what I'm going through," Murphy said.

Describing Ebdon's intense coaching style, Murphy added: "He puts so much into it, he's so committed. He coaches like he played. He's playing every ball, and if he could be out there with a cue, he would be. Jo and I are fine. Peter needs a medic backstage! It means so much."

Ebdon's Own Crucible Glory

Ebdon won the World Championship in 2002, defeating Stephen Hendry 18-17 to prevent the Scot from claiming an eighth crown. That remains his only world title. Murphy now has the chance to surpass his mentor by lifting the trophy on Monday.

Wu Yize's Path to the Final

Wu Yize, 22, is competing in his first World Championship final. He has beaten Lei Peifan, Mark Selby, Hossein Vafaei, and Mark Allen en route to this stage, despite being ranked 10th in the WPBSA standings. The Chinese prodigy has proven he can compete with the elite, setting up a compelling showdown.
