Hollywood glamour in the Championship these days is often linked with Wrexham, but another club enjoyed a touch of star power on Wednesday night. Eagle-eyed supporters spotted the renowned actor Sean Bean in the stands at St Mary's Stadium for Southampton's clash with Sheffield United.
A Lifelong Blade in the Away End
The Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and GoldenEye star was there to cheer on his beloved Blades, who unfortunately suffered a 1-0 defeat. Bean, aged 66, was dressed in a flat cap and a Barbour-style jacket, blending in among the travelling fans who had journeyed south for the match.
Stony-Faced Support
He was photographed shaking hands with a few fellow Sheffield United supporters before kick-off, but his expression turned stony-faced for much of the contest as his side fell behind. A deflected strike by Leo Scienza in the seventh minute proved decisive, making it a disappointing outing for both Bean and Chris Wilder's team.
Born and raised on a council estate in Sheffield, Bean is a lifelong Sheffield United fan. He achieved a scholarship to the prestigious acting school RADA in 1981 before launching his successful career. Despite his fame, he has never forgotten his roots, famously sporting a '100 per cent Blade' tattoo on his shoulder.
Rare Appearances Amid Work Commitments
While Bean has been seen at matches in the past, his busy work schedule—including recent roles in This City Is Ours and a TV adaptation of Robin Hood—means such appearances are now few and far between. This made his presence at St Mary's all the more notable for fans.
Sheffield United's Struggles Continue
The defeat on Wednesday night marks Sheffield United's third consecutive loss, including a penalty shootout defeat to Mansfield Town in the FA Cup. The team currently sits in 17th place in the Championship table, facing a tough battle to avoid relegation.
It doesn't get any easier for Chris Wilder and his squad, as they prepare to face in-form Ipswich on Saturday. They will need to rally quickly to climb away from the drop zone and improve their fortunes in the league.
