Scotland's hopes of automatic World Cup qualification remain alive after a dramatic night of football, despite a 3-2 defeat to Greece in Athens. A shock draw for Belarus against Denmark means Scotland can still top the group with a win over Denmark at Hampden Park on Tuesday.
Steve Clarke's side trailed 3-0 before mounting a spirited fightback. Goals from Ben Doak and Ryan Christie pulled them back to 3-2, and Greece finished with 10 men after Tasos Bakasetas was sent off. However, Scotland could not find an equaliser.
Greece took the lead through Bakasetas after John Souttar's error, and further goals from Konstantinos Karetsas and Christos Tzolis put them in control. Craig Gordon made several fine saves to keep Scotland in the game.
Clarke admitted to mixed emotions after the match. 'A crazy game, crazy night. We conceded bad goals and scored good goals. I am pleased the players still have the opportunity to go directly to the World Cup but disappointed we lost the game,' he said.
Scotland must now beat Denmark on Tuesday to secure top spot and automatic qualification for the World Cup in Qatar.
