McTominay and Adams Strike as Dismal Scotland Edge Out Belarus and Secure Playoff Slot

Scotland laboured to a 2-0 win over Belarus at Hampden Park, but the performance left manager Steve Clarke furious despite securing at least a World Cup playoff berth. Goals from Ché Adams and Scott McTominay were enough, but the Scots were outplayed for long spells by the 100th-ranked side in the world.

Adams opened the scoring in the first half, slamming home after a VAR review overturned an offside call. McTominay added a second late on, but his muted celebration reflected the mood. Belarus had 22 shots on goal and were denied a second-half equaliser by a contentious VAR decision.

“I am really, really disappointed,” Clarke said. “As disappointed as I have been during 72 games in charge. We just didn’t turn up. The performance was way below par.” Despite the win, Scotland were unconvincing in defence, lacking authority in midfield and ponderous in attack.

Belarus coach Carlos Alós said: “In my opinion we deserved to at least draw this game.” Denmark’s win over Greece meant Scotland secured a playoff spot, but questions remain over their form.
