England women's cricket team has been dealt a significant injury concern ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, as captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has sustained a calf problem. The all-rounder will miss the One-Day International (ODI) series against New Zealand as a precautionary measure to ensure her fitness for the global tournament on home soil.
Injury Details and Squad Changes
Sciver-Brunt picked up the calf issue while playing for the Blaze on Wednesday. As a result, she has been withdrawn from the squad selected by head coach Charlotte Edwards for the ODI series against the White Ferns. Vice-captain Charlie Dean, who was initially rested for this series, will now lead the side in Sciver-Brunt's absence. Additionally, Maia Bouchier has been called up to provide batting cover.
England's medical team will monitor Sciver-Brunt's recovery closely, with a decision on her participation in the T20 series against New Zealand and India to be made in due course. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has emphasized that her absence from the 50-over matches is purely precautionary, as the team prioritizes her availability for the T20 World Cup.
World Cup Preparations
The T20 World Cup squad recently took part in a leadership programme with the British Army, which did not involve physical activities for Sciver-Brunt. The team has not played competitive cricket since exiting the 50-over World Cup against South Africa in October.
England will open their T20 World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on 12 June at Edgbaston. They are placed in Group B alongside the West Indies, Scotland, Ireland, and New Zealand. The tournament represents a major opportunity for England to claim silverware on home turf.
