Robbie Savage has been appointed as the new manager of Forest Green Rovers on a four-year contract, with the club aiming to return to the English Football League. The former Wales international acknowledged scepticism over his appointment, given his limited managerial experience, but expressed confidence in his ability to succeed.
Savage led Macclesfield FC to the Northern Premier League title in his sole season as manager, after transitioning from director of football. He was also a part-owner at Macclesfield, but has since been removed as a director and plans to sell his remaining shares. He cited conversations with Brendan Rodgers, Martin O'Neill and Sean Dyche as sources of encouragement.
Forest Green owner Dale Vince defended the appointment, noting that Savage is a high-profile person rather than a high-profile manager. Savage intends to relocate to the Cotswolds and immerse himself in the club's culture, with the goal of regaining EFL status. The club has plans for a new all-timber 5,000-capacity stadium, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.
Savage takes over from Steve Cotterill, who led the team to the National League playoffs last season. The club has seen previous high-profile appointments including Duncan Ferguson and Troy Deeney, with limited success. Savage aims to grow the fanbase and embrace the club's ambitions, stating: 'I want to take this club back to the EFL.'
