Egypt's hopes of a record-extending eighth Africa Cup of Nations title were dashed as they lost to Senegal in a penalty shootout in Sunday's final. The match, played at the Paul Biya Stadium, ended 0-0 after extra time, with Senegal converting their spot kicks 4-2.
Mohamed Salah, Egypt's star player, was reduced to tears at the final whistle as his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane scored the decisive penalty. It was a bitter end for the Pharaohs, who had advanced through three successive knockout rounds on penalties, including a semi-final victory over hosts Cameroon.
Senegal dominated much of the match, creating numerous chances. Egypt goalkeeper Gabaski made vital saves, including an early penalty stop from Mane, but could not prevent the shootout defeat. At the other end, Senegal's Edouard Mendy saved a penalty from Mohanad Lasheen and saw another spot kick hit the post.
The defeat continues a pattern of heartbreak for Salah, who admitted previously that winning the AFCON would surpass any club honour. Now 32 by the time of the 2023 tournament, time is running out for the forward to add the continental prize to his collection.
