Mohamed Salah tipped for European move over Saudi Arabia after Liverpool exit

The 33-year-old Egyptian forward announced this week that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the current season, sparking widespread speculation about his next destination.

Carragher predicts European ambition over Saudi riches

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has suggested that Mohamed Salah will likely defy the lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia to continue his high-profile playing career at one of Europe's elite clubs.

Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Carragher expressed his belief that Salah remains driven enough to pursue more Champions League success before eventually considering moves to Saudi Arabia or North America's MLS.

"I think Mo Salah, the way he's driven like a Ronaldo, I don't see the Saudi thing just yet," Carragher stated. "I can see him in Italy with one of the giants. I just think your career's over when you go there (Saudi Arabia)."

Carragher emphasized that Salah likely still views himself as one of the world's best players, believing he has more to offer at the highest level of European football.

Salah's impressive European credentials

The Egyptian forward, who spent two seasons with Roma before joining Liverpool in 2017, has established himself as one of the Premier League's most prolific attackers.

His achievements include:

  • Winning the Champions League with Liverpool
  • Currently ranking 11th on the all-time Champions League goalscorers list
  • Scoring 255 goals from 435 appearances for Liverpool
  • Being ranked sixth in Liverpool's all-time greatest players list by Carragher

Carragher placed Salah behind only Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard, Graeme Souness, Ian Rush and John Barnes in Liverpool's historical rankings.

Timing of the departure

Carragher, who had previously criticized Salah following a mixed zone outburst after being benched against Leeds last year, described the player's decision to leave with one year remaining on his contract as "the right decision for everyone."

The former defender acknowledged the difficulty Liverpool faced in making this decision, noting that "how could you not give the best player in the Premier League a new contract last season."

He added that while the departure might have been possible last summer, it has ultimately occurred "a year earlier than we thought."

Salah's impending departure marks the end of a remarkable era at Anfield, during which he transformed from a promising talent into one of world football's most recognizable and accomplished forwards.
