George Russell won the sprint race at the Canadian Grand Prix, but only after a heated battle with his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli reached an angry flashpoint. The pair clashed for the lead on track, leaving the teenage Italian demanding a penalty for the British driver.
Flashpoint on Track
The incident occurred when Antonelli attempted to pass Russell at turn one on lap six. As the Italian fought for the lead, the cars brushed, forcing Antonelli off the track. He immediately called for a penalty on team radio, stating, "That should be a penalty, I was alongside the mirror." Russell, however, maintained he held his line.
Wolff Intervenes
The tension escalated to the point where team principal Toto Wolff intervened, telling Antonelli to "stop the radio moaning." The incident cost Mercedes a likely one-two finish, as Antonelli fell to third behind McLaren's Lando Norris. Russell closed the championship gap to his teammate to 18 points.
Antonelli's Frustration
Antonelli continued to push hard after the clash, but an error at the chicane sent him onto the grass, allowing Norris to take second. The 19-year-old admitted the mistake but remained furious. "I don't care he pushed me off!" he responded to his race engineer's call for calm.
Post-Race Reactions
After the race, Wolff insisted the issue would be discussed privately. Antonelli said, "I tried to make my move, I need to review it, because I was quite well alongside and I got pushed off." Russell simply commented, "It was a good battle with Kimi."
Championship Implications
The win was a strong start to the weekend for Russell, who had won the season opener in Australia and the first sprint in China. However, Antonelli had won the past three races, taking a strong lead in the championship. Russell needed to reassert himself and did so in this first real test.
Other Results
Oscar Piastri finished fourth for McLaren, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were fifth and sixth for Ferrari, Max Verstappen took seventh for Red Bull, and Arvid Lindblad was eighth for Racing Bulls.
