Ruben Amorim has agreed in principle to become the next Manchester United manager, with the club negotiating a compensation package with Sporting Lisbon. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach will replace Erik ten Hag on a permanent basis.
United made contact with Amorim amid interest from Manchester City, who had earmarked him as a prime candidate to succeed Pep Guardiola. However, United convinced Amorim that City could become a fading force if Guardiola leaves when his contract expires next summer, with several key players including Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan approaching the end of their contracts.
Amorim took charge of Sporting in 2020 and ended the club's 19-year title drought in 2021. His release clause is set at €10 million, a fee deemed acceptable by United's hierarchy. The appointment also reunites chief executive Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox, both former City employees.
