However, he has distanced himself from a United comeback and recently backed Newcastle boss Eddie Howe for the role, praising his calmness and track record.
Keane's comments on Sky Sports about Ferguson 'hanging on like a bad smell' may have alienated him at Old Trafford, though co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already reduced Ferguson's role.
