Roy Hodgson Secures Victory in First Match as Bristol City Manager

At 78 years old, Roy Hodgson has made a triumphant return to management with Bristol City, winning his inaugural game in charge of the Championship side. The former England manager, appointed last week for the remainder of the season, oversaw a 2-1 away victory against Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

A Dream Start for Hodgson's Tenure

The match began promisingly for Bristol City, with Scott Twine scoring an early goal just 11 minutes into the game. Charlton Athletic responded with an equaliser from Lyndon Dykes on the half-hour mark, but a critical error by goalkeeper Will Mannion allowed Noah Eile to restore the visitors' lead. Hodgson's team demonstrated resilience to hold onto the three points, moving up to 13th in the Championship table and ending a six-game winless streak under previous manager Gerhard Struber.

Hodgson's Humble Reaction to the Win

Post-match, Hodgson was quick to deflect praise onto his players, emphasising their efforts over his own influence. "I was pleased for the team. I was pleased with the way that they went about trying to win the game," he stated via the Bristol Post. "I thought in the first half, and in the second half, before the onslaught started, we were looking really good value for a victory. Also, I must take my hat off to that backline, the goalkeeper and the midfield players for surviving the onslaught."

He further downplayed the role of managers, adding, "I'm afraid that the cult of the manager, the cult of the coach is something that I tend to play down. It's football players that win it. If you're going to win, you need quality in your team."

A Storied Career Continues

Hodgson's coaching career spans an impressive 50 years, during which he has managed 22 different clubs and national teams. Many believed his managerial days were over after he left Crystal Palace in February 2024 due to illness. However, his return to Bristol City, where he had a previous spell over four decades ago, marks a significant chapter in his nomadic journey.

Despite ruling out a long-term stay at Ashton Gate, Hodgson appeared energetic and engaged on the touchline. "I've learned a lot," he reflected. "Don't forget, this is the first time I've seen these seriously play live, so I've learned a lot. I think they should be proud of the fact that they came away with the three points, and I personally thought, certainly for large periods of the game, we were more deserving of it."

Looking Ahead for Bristol City

Bristol City's next fixtures include a home game against Sheffield United on Monday, followed by an away match at Queens Park Rangers next Saturday. Hodgson's immediate focus will be on building momentum from this victory as the team aims to climb higher in the Championship standings.
