Chelsea Manager Addresses Cole Palmer Speculation
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has publicly addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding the future of midfielder Cole Palmer, firmly stating that the player remains content at Stamford Bridge. This comes amid widespread reports linking the England international with a potential return to Manchester, specifically to Manchester United.
Injury-Hit Season Fuels Transfer Talk
Cole Palmer has endured a challenging 2025/26 campaign, with persistent fitness issues significantly limiting his involvement. The 23-year-old playmaker has managed only 10 starts in Chelsea's 22 Premier League matches so far, hampered primarily by a troublesome groin injury. His output has been affected, with just five goals recorded across 13 appearances in all competitions this season.
This lack of consistent availability and form has fuelled media speculation about his happiness in west London. Recent reports, notably from The Sun, suggested Palmer was "unsettled" at Chelsea and did not "particularly enjoy life" at the club since his high-profile move from Manchester City in September 2023. The narrative was compounded by the player's childhood support for Manchester United, leading to rumours he might be open to a Manchester return.
Rosenior's Firm Rebuttal and Long-Term Plans
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Chelsea's Premier League clash with Crystal Palace, Rosenior delivered a clear message regarding Palmer's status. "I've had numerous conversations with Cole and he seems very happy to be here," the manager stated. "He's a huge part in our long-term plans."
Rosenior acknowledged the frustration surrounding Palmer's fitness, particularly referencing the recent match against Brentford. He emphasised the club's duty to manage the player carefully. "My job and the club's job is to get him into a situation where he can consistently perform to the level he wants to. There was frustration in the Brentford game. We need to look after him and that's why I didn't involve him in the last game," he explained.
When pressed on whether Palmer was fully fit, Rosenior focused on the broader management strategy. "That's my job [to get him there]. I need to look after the players. Not just in terms of Cole, but there's a number of players in the group to look after. I want us to be involved at the end of the season in big games and big competitions," he added.
Team Context and Midfield Considerations
The situation unfolds against the backdrop of Chelsea's squad management. Palmer was rested for the midweek Champions League victory over Pafos, following his penalty goal in the weekend win against Brentford. He is expected to be involved for the upcoming trip to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Meanwhile, Rosenior also fielded questions about Chelsea's midfield options, with injuries affecting players like Dario Essugo and Romeo Lavia. He played down immediate transfer needs, stating, "We have Enzo [Fernandez], Moi [Caicedo], Andrey Santos and Reece James - it's not bad. I don't want to bring in players that don't enhance the group or the chemistry we're building." This comment subtly reinforces the message that Palmer remains a valued part of the core squad Rosenior is constructing.
