Chelsea Manager Confident of Board Support Amidst Poor Run
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has emphatically declared that he feels he has the unequivocal backing of the club's hierarchy, even as mounting pressure surrounds his role following a string of disappointing results. The Blues' recent form has been nothing short of dismal, with four successive Premier League defeats and a failure to score in any of those matches, severely jeopardising their aspirations for Champions League qualification.
European Hopes Dwindling as Gap Widens
Chelsea currently languish in sixth position in the Premier League table, a concerning seven points behind fifth-placed Liverpool. This widening gap has intensified scrutiny on Rosenior's future, particularly after audible boos echoed around Stamford Bridge following Saturday's narrow 1-0 loss to Manchester United. The defeat has left the club's European ambitions hanging by a thread, with the prospect of missing out on continental football entirely becoming a tangible reality.
When directly questioned about whether he believes the Chelsea board still supports him ahead of Tuesday's crucial away fixture against Brighton, Rosenior was resolute in his response. '100 per cent,' he stated firmly. 'They’ve been supportive of me in our daily conversations, the sporting directors involved - they’ve been magnificent in their support of me and the team.'
Alignment on Objectives Despite Setbacks
Rosenior elaborated on the shared vision between himself and the club's leadership, emphasising a collective understanding of the immediate need for results. 'We’re aligned that we know we need to win games of football now,' he explained. 'That doesn’t go against what we’re trying to do, which is to give consistent success to this club long term.' This statement comes at a critical juncture, with Chelsea's position looking increasingly precarious; they are merely three points ahead of Fulham in 12th place, highlighting the risk of a complete absence from European competition next season.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Rosenior remained characteristically optimistic when discussing the path forward. 'We’ve made it very difficult for ourselves,' he admitted regarding their Champions League prospects. 'We have to be honest and realistic with that. But what we can’t do is give up. We have to keep fighting.'
Focus on Performance Improvements
The manager outlined the specific areas requiring immediate improvement as his squad prepares for the trip to the Amex Stadium. 'We have to make sure we go to Brighton with similar attributes to what I saw against Manchester United in terms of our energy, intensity and engagement to the game, which was good,' Rosenior noted. 'But we didn’t keep a clean sheet, and we didn’t take advantage of the chances, so we need to be more clinical and ruthless in both boxes.' This focus on defensive solidity and attacking efficiency underscores the tactical adjustments needed to reverse their fortunes.
Ownership Backing and Strategic Discussions
Recent comments from co-owner Behdad Eghbali have reinforced the public show of support for Rosenior. Eghbali previously insisted the club remains behind the manager and hinted at a potential shift in recruitment strategy towards more experienced players in the upcoming summer transfer window, marking a departure from the recent emphasis on youthful signings.
When pressed on these remarks, Rosenior confirmed ongoing strategic dialogues. 'I can assure you we’ve had many conversations from when I joined in January about what this club needs now and in the future for us to be where we want to be,' he said. 'Behdad wants consistent trophies and success. That’s what we’ve spoken about in the now and in the summer and how we build. We’re all very aligned and clear in what we need to do, what we want to do and what we have to do to get this club back to where it should be.'
Team News Ahead of Brighton Clash
In terms of squad availability, Rosenior provided updates on key players. Joao Pedro will undergo a late fitness assessment ahead of the Brighton encounter, while Enzo Fernandez has been declared fit to participate. However, the team will be without Estevao, who continues to recover from the hamstring injury sustained during the Manchester United match.
