Rooney's Surprising Take on Guardiola's Man City Future

Wayne Rooney's Unexpected Admission on Pep Guardiola's Manchester City Future

Former Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has made a surprising confession regarding Pep Guardiola's future at Manchester City, with the manager's long-term plans remaining uncertain. The Spanish tactician signed a new three-year contract at the Etihad Stadium in late 2024, but speculation persists that he might depart after a decade at the club.

Rooney's Hope for Guardiola to Remain

Despite his allegiance to Manchester United, Rooney expressed a desire for Guardiola to stay at City. On the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, he stated: "Some players will want him to leave, some will want him to stay, it depends whether you are in the team or not and that is the same for any manager."

He elaborated: "I hope he stays because he is brilliant for the Premier League and you want the best managers in the Premier League. He has set a benchmark over the past 10 years for everyone else."

Potential Successors and Guardiola's Influence

While names like Enzo Maresca and Xabi Alonso have been touted as frontrunners to succeed Guardiola, Rooney proposed a different candidate. He suggested that Vincent Kompany, currently managing Bayern Munich, would be an ideal replacement.

Rooney explained: "If Pep does go, they have to go and get Vincent Kompany. He knows the club, he has been successful with Bayern in a similar way. It looks like he has learned from Pep. Pep will probably choose the next manager. If he is going, he will probably be part of the process to choose the next one."

He added: "I just think in terms of Pep, he looks at himself as a bit of a teacher and he has been at the club for 10 years, he will want to leave the club in a good place."

Thoughts on the Premier League Title Race

Rooney also shared his perspective on the ongoing title battle between Arsenal and Manchester City, which intensified after Arsenal's draw with Wolves. He highlighted the potential impact of a Champions League clash between the two sides.

"I think a big factor will be if Manchester City and Arsenal meet in the Champions League. The emotions around the League Cup final, the Champions League games, if that is the case, and then the game at the Etihad. The emotion around those games and what that will bring, whoever comes out on top in those I think will win the league," Rooney said.

Despite his hope for Guardiola to stay, Rooney revealed his personal preference for the title winner: "I would prefer Arsenal to win it. I played for Manchester United for 13 years! For me, Liverpool are the ones I wouldn't want to win it and then it would be City. I think Arsenal will just win it."

Guardiola has consistently deflected questions about his future, focusing instead on the Premier League title race. However, Rooney's comments add a new dimension to the ongoing discussion, blending managerial succession plans with insights into the competitive landscape of English football.
