Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney has issued a stark warning to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, suggesting that the Spaniard could face the sack if he fails to deliver the Premier League title this season. Rooney's comments come as Arsenal hold a commanding six-point lead at the top of the table, making them firm favourites to secure their first league crown since 2004.
No Excuses for Arteta as Arsenal Lead the Pack
Speaking on his popular show, The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney emphasised that Arteta has been backed extensively by the Arsenal hierarchy, who have provided him with a fantastic squad capable of challenging for honours. With the Gunners now in pole position, Rooney believes there can be no room for error or excuses if the title slips from their grasp.
"I think for Arteta as well, if they don't win it this year, then you know, Arsenal have backed him massively here, certainly this year as well, and given him a fantastic squad. So if they don't win it this year, then I think there'll be pressure on Arteta, definitely for sure," Rooney stated bluntly.
Psychological Blow from Manchester City's Dramatic Win
Rooney also highlighted the potential psychological impact of Manchester City's dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Liverpool at Anfield last Sunday. Had City lost, Arsenal's lead would have stretched to nine points, but the late turnaround narrowed the gap to six, injecting fresh tension into the title race.
Drawing from his own experiences in title battles with Manchester United, Rooney explained how such results can affect a team's mindset. "The effect it can have is huge, because I remember when we were in title races, and if you played the Saturday or you played earlier and you win, and then you see the gap at nine points just by coming back to six. And the way it's happened as well, because obviously Liverpool go a goal up, you think, if this stays at nine points then what a boost that is for us," he said.
He added that watching such matches can be draining, noting, "But then City coming back, you waste energy watching it, 100 per cent. So I'm sure Arteta will be just telling his players to focus on their job, what they have to do."
Focus on Winning Games, Not Fixture Calculations
Rooney cautioned against getting too caught up in analysing other teams' results or trying to predict outcomes from upcoming fixtures. He stressed that the only thing that truly matters is Arsenal winning their own matches consistently.
"Because you can get caught up in it and look at other people's results. And I don't think that's a good thing. And they will be looking at the fixtures coming up, and trying to work out how many points they feel they'll win, or City will win. You get caught up in it all and in the end, all that matters really is if you win your games. That's it," Rooney concluded.
