Cristiano Ronaldo's Heartfelt Message to Lindsey Vonn Following Near Leg Amputation
Lindsey Vonn, the celebrated American skiing champion, has disclosed that she narrowly avoided a leg amputation after a devastating crash at the Winter Olympics. In an emotional update shared on Instagram, Vonn detailed the severe injuries she sustained and the life-saving intervention by Dr Tom Hackett. Among the flood of supportive messages, one from football icon Cristiano Ronaldo stood out, offering words of encouragement and praise for her resilience.
The Horror Crash and Medical Ordeal
During the women's downhill competition, Vonn struck a gate merely 13 seconds into her run, leading to a complex tibia fracture and a fractured fibula head. She was airlifted to a hospital in Italy, where she underwent four major operations. After returning to the United States, she required a fifth surgery. Vonn explained that compartment syndrome, a condition where excessive blood flow causes tissue damage, threatened her leg, but Dr Hackett performed a fasciotomy to save it.
"Dr Tom Hackett saved my leg from being amputated," Vonn stated in her video. "He cut open both sides of my leg to let it breathe, and I feel very lucky and grateful for his six-hour surgery." She also mentioned struggling with pain and low haemoglobin levels, necessitating a blood transfusion during her hospital stay.
Recovery Journey and Future Plans
Currently in a wheelchair due to immobility from her injuries, including a broken right ankle, Vonn anticipates using crutches for at least two months. She plans to focus on rehabilitation, with bones expected to take around a year to heal fully. Vonn added that she will later decide whether to remove surgical metal implants and address a torn ACL from the crash. "It will be a long road, but I'll get there," she affirmed, expressing gratitude for being out of the hospital.
Cristiano Ronaldo's Inspirational Tribute
Among thousands of supportive comments, Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portugal and Manchester United legend, posted a stirring message on social media. He wrote, "Champions are defined by the moments they win, and the moments they refuse to give up. Lindsey Vonn, the mountains you conquered were never bigger than the strength you carry. Keep fighting. Legends always rise." This tribute highlights the global support for Vonn as she navigates her recovery.
Vonn has now returned home after a gruelling fortnight of medical procedures, where she will continue her rehabilitation efforts. Her story underscores the physical and emotional challenges faced by athletes after severe injuries, with messages like Ronaldo's providing motivation during difficult times.
