Cristian Romero's father has confirmed that the Tottenham Hotspur captain has a 'very high release clause' in his current contract, valued between $50 million and $70 million (£37.8 million and £53 million). The revelation comes amid speculation that the Argentine defender could leave the north London club this summer due to their ongoing struggles in the Premier League.
Tottenham currently sit 17th in the top flight, just one point above the relegation zone, with new manager Roberto De Zerbi set to take charge of his first game against Sunderland next weekend. Romero, who has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring six goals and providing four assists, has been linked with a move away if the club are relegated.
In an interview with local media, Victor Romero said: 'He has two more years on his contract with Tottenham and a very high release clause. The English club isn't going to let him go for free; it's between $50-70m.' The 27-year-old has attracted interest from La Liga side Atletico Madrid, with manager Diego Simeone reportedly a fan. A return to his boyhood club Club Atletico Belgrano has also been speculated, with his father admitting he hopes the rumours are true.
'It's a bombshell that keeps getting bigger. I hope it's true. As a Belgrano fan and father, what more could I want? But I don't know anything,' Victor Romero added. 'Cuti isn't one to make statements, that's why it surprises me. I don't know anything, but in football, anything can happen.'
