Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has opened up about transfer discussions that occurred with Tottenham Hotspur during the January window, confirming that talks took place between the two Premier League clubs. The Scotland international, who serves as Liverpool's vice-captain, emphasized that his preference was always to remain at Anfield despite the surprise approach from Spurs.
Robertson's Commitment to Liverpool
In a candid revelation, Robertson stated, "There was obviously interest there. There were discussions had with both sets of clubs. But the decision was that I wanted to stay. We stayed at Liverpool and that was the decision made." He further underscored his loyalty to the Merseyside club, adding, "I was never not committed. I've been committed to Liverpool for the last eight and a half or nine years now and I'll be committed until I'm no longer needed."
Liverpool's Stance on the Transfer
The Premier League champions initially considered Tottenham's offer out of respect for Robertson, who is in the final months of his contract. However, Liverpool ultimately changed their minds and decided against allowing the left-back to depart. Robertson himself was adamant about not wanting to leave, highlighting the strong relationship he has built with the club. "This club has given me everything and I've given this club everything. It's been a fantastic relationship so hopefully that continues," he remarked.
Seasonal Challenges and Future Discussions
This season, Robertson has faced increased competition for his position, with summer signing Milos Kerkez emerging as the first-choice left-back. Despite dropping down the pecking order, Robertson impressed in recent performances, such as the FA Cup win against Wolves. He has expressed a desire to play more regularly but remains focused on his future at Liverpool.
Contract Talks and Private Negotiations
Robertson has engaged in discussions with Liverpool's sporting director Richard Hughes and other club officials regarding a potential new deal. He stressed that these conversations will remain confidential, stating, "I've always said that will stay between me and the club. I don't think it will get played out in public. It is not one of them." He praised his relationships with key figures like Hughes, Mike Gordon, and Michael Edwards, noting, "I have got an amazing relationship with Richard and with Mike Gordon and Michael Edwards. They have helped make me who I am, so in that respect, we've had a fantastic relationship."
Robertson concluded by reflecting on the January transfer window, saying, "Obviously January happened, but it is now gone," indicating his focus is now squarely on continuing his career with Liverpool.
