Jamie Redknapp issued a damning indictment of Manchester United’s squad depth after the Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham. Michael Carrick’s side went ahead against the run of play when Bryan Mbeumo arrowed home on 73 minutes, but Dominic Solanke nodded in a late equaliser to snatch a point for Spurs, which lifted them off the bottom of the Premier League table.
United second best throughout
United had struggled throughout, and they were second best for much of the encounter as their visitors had them chasing shadows, with Mohammed Kudus and Savio especially bright out wide. The home side’s performance got so bad that it forced Carrick into three second-half substitutions, including a debut for Carlos Baleba, who has just returned from his pre-existing ankle injury that arrived from Brighton and Hove Albion with.
The Cameroon international was impressive on his Old Trafford bow, but Redknapp said in the Sky Sports studio that the United boss needed far more backing in the summer transfer market.
Redknapp's verdict on the squad
"Brighton in the Carabao Cup, 2-0 up and lose 3-2, that is unprecedented and does not happen at Old Trafford, except it does with this team."
"I do not see enough connections in that midfield and they look devoid of any confidence, ideas, or patterns of play, playing out the back and Tottenham were just much better than them in every department, but that is just a theme this season."
"Their energy levels are not good enough and they look loose going forward, there was no real structure."
"The squad is not good or strong enough and Michael [Carrick] needs help in that respect."
What's next for United
The single point keeps United in 12th position in the top flight, and they next take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, in a stiff test against last season’s semi-finalists.
