Harry Redknapp maintained an optimistic outlook despite the disappointment of his horse The Jukebox Man falling short in the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup. Redknapp's eight-year-old contender ran out of steam in the final stages, allowing Gaelic Warrior to seize victory in the showpiece event at Cheltenham Racecourse on Friday, 13 March 2026.
Redknapp's Champions League Comparison
The former football manager drew a vivid parallel between winning the Gold Cup and achieving football's highest club honour. "Yeah, absolutely [it would have been like winning the Champions League] if we had won here today, but Gaelic Warrior was fantastic. My God, didn't he win? Really impressive," Redknapp remarked after the race.
The Race Unfolds
On a sunny afternoon at Prestbury Park, Redknapp, accompanied by his wife Sandra and son Jamie, watched eagerly as The Jukebox Man positioned himself well heading into the home stretch. The horse kept pace with leader Haiti Couleurs before fading when Gaelic Warrior surged ahead with just two fences remaining.
Redknapp provided a detailed assessment: "Yeah, he traveled great until two out, and then he just seemed to just fall in a bit of a hole, but overall he jumped great, run great and he's come back, hopefully safe and sound, which is the main thing."
No Excuses Despite Setback
The 79-year-old racing enthusiast revealed that The Jukebox Man had missed a crucial week of training before the Festival but refused to attribute the loss to this factor. "He missed a week's work and I'm not blaming it, I'm not making excuses," Redknapp explained. "The winner won, different class but he did miss a week's work. He simply just ran out of steam today."
Celebrating the Experience
Redknapp expressed immense enjoyment throughout the Cheltenham week, relishing the anticipation of fielding a Gold Cup contender. "I've loved it. It's been a great week. The build up and the dream and everything. I've loved it. To have a runner here with a chance was fantastic for me," he said.
He continued with gracious praise for the victor: "I'm not saying he would have won. The winner was amazing. That was absolute Gaelic warrior today. He absolutely bolted up, didn't it? But we've had another great run for him again today. Yeah, he's jumped, well, run well. So, yeah, that's how it goes."
Positive Reflections and National Appeal
Despite the obvious letdown, Redknapp remained positive, highlighting how The Jukebox Man had captured the hearts of racing fans across the nation. He concluded: "that's why it would have been great today if he could have won it. He didn't but he came and give his best shot."
Redknapp's Racing Legacy
This Gold Cup appearance marks a significant elevation in Redknapp's ownership career. His sole previous Cheltenham Festival triumph occurred in 2024 when Shakem Up'Arry won the Plate Handicap Chase. Competing in the Gold Cup represents a notable step into the upper echelon of racehorse ownership, underscoring his growing influence in the sport.
