Rayo Vallecano secured a remarkable 3-0 victory over Atlético Madrid on Sunday, despite being forced to play at Leganés’ stadium due to their own ground being declared unusable. The club, based in the working-class neighbourhood of Vallecas, has been embroiled in a bitter dispute with owner Raúl Martín Presa, with fans calling for his resignation and players complaining about deteriorating facilities.
The team prepared at Getafe’s training ground after their own pitch developed a fungal infection. At Leganés’ stadium, 9,000 seats remained empty as a protest by fans who instead gathered in the streets of Vallecas. The win came just days after Atlético had thrashed Barcelona 4-0, highlighting the unpredictable nature of football.
Captain Óscar Trejo had previously relinquished his armband in protest, describing a club with “problem after problem”. The squad issued a statement two weeks ago saying they could not continue under current conditions. Staff have reportedly paid for equipment out of their own pockets, and players have endured a lack of hot water in showers.
The stadium has been criticised for its poor state, with rubbish, exposed cables, and broken cement. Kit managers from visiting teams have shared videos showing cramped, dark dressing rooms with basic furnishings. The playing surface was described by defender Pep Chavarría as “a disgrace” and by teammate Álvaro García as “not even good enough for regional football”.
Coach Íñigo Pérez lamented that the team could not play their usual style on the substandard pitch. Despite the adversity, Rayo’s victory moved them out of the relegation zone, defying the odds once again. The club remains the smallest in La Liga, but their spirit and resistance continue to define them.
