Former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune has praised his South African compatriot Olwethu Makhanya after the defender's strong start to life at Rangers.
Makhanya has earned plaudits since his £3m summer move from MLS side Philadelphia Union, with a fine beginning to his Ibrox career.
Fortune's verdict on Makhanya's move
Fortune, who also played for Atletico Madrid, believes the switch to Rangers has been a great move for the 24-year-old.
"I watched Olwethu Makhanya a little bit when he was in MLS before and his transfer to Rangers has been a great move for him," Fortune said.
"It is unbelievable that he is able to play for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership. But that's what he had to do - go up another level."
Old Firm experience and South African football
Fortune highlighted the step up from MLS to European football and the experience of playing in the Old Firm derby.
"The MLS, with all due respect, is a great league, but European football is just a bigger stage," he added.
"He will improve there at Rangers and he has already played in the Old Firm match. I mean, you couldn't ask for a better experience in football. The Old Firm is football at its most pressurised."
Fortune also sees the transfer as part of a wider process that could benefit South African football.
"Getting a move like this is all part of the process that will ultimately help to take South African football up to the next level," he said.
