Radek Vitek Declares He Won't Settle for Bench Role at Manchester United

Czech goalkeeper Radek Vitek has made it clear that he will not accept a deputy position at Manchester United, despite admitting he "couldn't turn down" the chance to join the club six years ago. The 22-year-old shotstopper, currently on loan at Bristol City, is determined to push for a first-team place rather than warm the bench for Senne Lammens.

From Youth Prospect to Championship Standout

Vitek joined Manchester United in 2020 as a youth player but has yet to make a senior competitive appearance for the Red Devils. After progressing through the youth ranks at Old Trafford, he embarked on loan spells at Accrington Stanley in 2024 and in the Austrian Bundesliga before establishing himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for Bristol City in 2025.

At Bristol City, Vitek has impressed with 37 appearances in the Championship, keeping 11 clean sheets in over 3,300 minutes of action. He secured his starting role after fellow goalkeeper Max O’Leary suffered an injury during pre-season, showcasing his skills and resilience.

Ambition Over Comfort: Vitek's Career Philosophy

In an interview with The Sun, Vitek emphasized his desire to play regularly rather than collect a salary without contributing. "At this stage in my career, at a young age, I want to play as many games as possible," he stated. "I wouldn’t benefit from sitting on the bench here, or anything else."

Reflecting on his journey, Vitek described the challenges of moving to a new country and language at a young age but affirmed it was the right decision. "If you don’t work for something in life, you can’t achieve much," he said, highlighting how the experience built his character and mentality.

Future Plans: Communication with United and Personal Goals

Vitek is currently focused on finishing the season strongly with Bristol City, with eight games remaining. "I just want to give my best for the club and to build my platform towards next season," he explained. He plans to communicate closely with Manchester United to determine the best path forward, but reiterated his commitment to playing football actively.

"I want to play football. I don’t want to just be somewhere sitting on the bench," Vitek asserted, while expressing gratitude for the trust United has shown in him. He acknowledged the significant improvement in his agility and movement since joining United's academy, crediting the coaching staff for his development.

As he looks ahead, Vitek is keen to challenge Lammens for the starting goalkeeper position at Old Trafford, aiming to become the newest hero for Manchester United fans. His determination and performance at Bristol City suggest he is ready to take that next step in his career.
