Jarell Quansah Banned Two Games by FIFA After Red Card Appeal
Quansah Hit With Two-Game Ban After FA Appeal

FIFA has banned England defender Jarell Quansah for two matches following his red card against Mexico, a decision that leaves his World Cup participation in jeopardy unless England reach the final or third-place play-off.

Two-Match Suspension Confirmed

The England defender was initially facing a one-match ban after being sent off during the 3-2 victory over Mexico. The Football Association (FA) were considering an appeal, but FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has now extended the suspension to two games. A statement on Thursday confirmed that “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed … a 2-match suspension for a breach of article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”

The committee concluded that Quansah’s tackle on Jesus Gallardo constituted “serious foul play.” The suspension applies only to the World Cup, meaning he will only be available again if England reach the final or contest the third-place play-off.

Tuchel Furious Over Decision

England head coach Thomas Tuchel was left furious by the decision. “It's just not good enough,” he said. “The referees are just not good enough, fourth officials are just not good enough. That's the bottom line. Is this a clear and obvious error for the penalty? For sure not.”

The ban means Quansah will miss the quarter-final against Norway in Miami and, if England advance, the semi-final as well. His World Cup could be over unless England beat Norway this weekend and progress deep into the tournament.

FA's Appeal and Precedent

The FA were considering appealing against Quansah’s original one-match ban due to a precedent involving Folarin Balogun of the United States. Balogun had received an automatic one-match ban for a red card but the committee overturned it, allowing him to play against Belgium. However, the USA lost 4-1 and were eliminated.

In Quansah's case, the committee not only upheld the ban but extended it, leaving England without a key defender for crucial matches.
