Australian football legend Ange Postecoglou has candidly confessed that taking on the manager role at Nottingham Forest was a significant error in judgment. The experienced football manager, who had recently been dismissed by Tottenham Hotspur, was appointed as the head coach at Nottingham Forest, only to be told his services were no longer required after a mere 39 days due to a disastrous start.
Struggling with Unemployment for the First Time
Postecoglou has now revealed that he was grappling with the unfamiliar sensation of being unemployed for the first time in over two decades. 'It was the first time in 20-odd years that I wasn't working. I was lost,' he disclosed during an interview on the Stick To Football podcast. 'In the off-season, I was so lost. Usually you would go away with your family, but there are transfers and pre-season ahead, so your mind is on that. I was lost.'
Acknowledging the Wrong Decision
The 60-year-old manager was brought in during a tumultuous period for Nottingham Forest, following the abrupt resignation of former manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Postecoglou has since admitted that accepting the position was the incorrect choice. 'That was on me, the whole Forest thing,' Postecoglou stated. 'That was a bad decision by me to go in there. But there is no point in me blaming it on not getting time or anything. I should never have gone in there.'
He elaborated further, explaining that the timing was ill-suited and the club's established methods clashed with his own approach. 'It was too soon after Tottenham, and I was taking over at a time where, obviously, I wanted to do things differently. They were kind of used to doing things in a certain way. I have to cop that — that was my mistake.'
The Allure of European Football
Despite the unfavorable circumstances, Postecoglou was drawn to the opportunity due to the presence of several star players in Nottingham Forest's Premier League squad and the prospect of competing in the Europa League. 'That was the only reason that sucked me in,' he admitted. 'They were also in Europe in the Europa League, and I wouldn't have minded another crack at that.'
Current Struggles of Former Clubs
Both of Postecoglou's most recent clubs, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, are currently positioned near the relegation zone in the Premier League standings. Each team has managed to secure victory in only seven matches this season. Meanwhile, Arsenal leads the league, closely followed by Manchester City and last year's champions, Liverpool.
Postecoglou's managerial career includes a successful stint with Scottish club Celtic, showcasing his decades of experience at the helm of high-level football clubs. However, his brief and challenging periods at Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest have highlighted the difficulties of transitioning between top-tier teams in competitive leagues.
