Ange Postecoglou is poised to make a swift return to the Premier League as Nottingham Forest's new head coach, following the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo. The former Tottenham manager, who was dismissed in June despite winning the Europa League, is expected to be confirmed imminently and could take charge for Forest's away match against Arsenal on Saturday.
The 60-year-old Australian turned down offers from Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli and Turkish side Fenerbahce, who had recently sacked Jose Mourinho. Reports indicate Postecoglou was determined to secure another opportunity in the Premier League, with Forest emerging as the frontrunner after Nuno's departure amid a rift with owner Evangelos Marinakis.
Postecoglou will be joined by several members of his former Spurs coaching staff. Forest owner Marinakis, who is of Greek heritage like Postecoglou, has previously praised the tactician, saying, 'Wherever he goes, the successes will come.' The move allows Postecoglou to compete in the Europa League again, a competition he won with Tottenham.
Manchester United had also been mentioned as a potential destination, but Postecoglou's poor domestic record at Spurs, where they finished 17th in the Premier League, likely deterred the club. West Ham was another option, but Graham Potter's recent win has eased pressure on his position.
