The victory marks the Patriots' first Super Bowl appearance since 2019, when they beat the Los Angeles Rams in Atlanta. The game was a defensive struggle in treacherous weather, with the Patriots doing just enough to overcome an overachieving Broncos side missing their starting quarterback.
Second-year quarterback Drake Maye, 23, will become the youngest signal-caller to start a Super Bowl since Dan Marino in 1985. Maye praised his team's resilience, saying, 'What an atmosphere out here, battling the elements. Love this team. It wasn’t ideal; the defence have been stepping up all play-offs. We are going to play better.' Head coach Mike Vrabel, in his first season at the helm, became one of only eight coaches to reach the Super Bowl in their debut year. Vrabel, a three-time Super Bowl winner as a Patriots player, praised his squad's adaptability.
The Broncos were forced to start journeyman Jarrett Stidham after starter Bo Nix suffered an ankle fracture in the divisional round. Stidham, making his first start in over two years, performed surprisingly well early, throwing a 52-yard pass and a touchdown in the first quarter. However, the Patriots' defence tightened, and Stidham could not maintain the momentum. Denver also missed several opportunities, allowing New England to escape with the win.
The Patriots became the first NFL team to go 9-0 on the road in a single season and equalled the San Francisco 49ers' record of 40 all-time playoff wins. After two losing seasons, New England surged to a 14-3 record under Vrabel and will face the winner of the NFC Championship at Levi's Stadium on 8 February.
