Crystal Palace now face a challenging away leg in their UEFA Conference League last-16 tie after being held to a goalless draw by Cypriot side AEK Larnaca at a windswept Selhurst Park. The Premier League outfit created several opportunities but ultimately lacked the clinical finishing required to break down a resilient Larnaca defence.
Familiar Foes Reunite at Selhurst
The two sides are no strangers, having previously met in the league phase at Selhurst Park back in October. On that occasion, Palace suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat, which forced them into a two-legged play-off against Zrinjski Mostar to secure their place in the knockout stages. This history added an extra layer of tension to the encounter.
Palace's New Look Line-Up
Oliver Glasner fielded a significantly altered starting eleven compared to the October fixture. The January departure of former captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City was notable, while new signings Jorgen Strand Larsen, Evann Guessand, and Brennan Johnson all started, injecting fresh energy into the side. However, none managed to exert a decisive influence on the match.
Jean-Philippe Mateta made a welcome return to the squad following a knee injury. His failed transfer to AC Milan had been one of several January sagas that dampened spirits in South London, but he was largely met with a warm reception when he replaced Strand Larsen late in the second half.
Larnaca's Defensive Resilience
AEK Larnaca, playing under new manager Javi Rozada for the first time after his appointment just days earlier on Monday, executed a disciplined defensive game plan. Rozada will undoubtedly be satisfied with how his team frustrated their top-flight hosts once again, limiting clear-cut chances despite Palace's possession and pressure.
Key Moments and Missed Opportunities
Evann Guessand had Palace's first real chance after patient build-up play from Strand Larsen, who evaded a sliding challenge to set up the Aston Villa loanee, but his shot was straight at Larnaca goalkeeper Zlatan Alomerovic.
Ismaila Sarr came close minutes later, curling an effort just over the crossbar after being tripped between two defenders but recovering possession. Alomerovic was called into action again, tipping a Sarr cross-shot into the path of Guessand, who could only deflect the ball wide under pressure.
Tyrick Mitchell missed a late first-half opportunity from close range, and after the break, Adam Wharton forced another save from Alomerovic. As the final 15 minutes approached, Palace continued to deliver crosses into the box, but Chris Richards headed over, and the finishing touch remained elusive.
Mateta's introduction with just over 10 minutes remaining sparked brief hope, but he failed to connect with a deflected ball. A perfectly-timed tackle from Hrvoje Milicevic denied Sarr a late opening, and Larnaca even created a rare half-chance, but the breakthrough never materialised, leaving the tie finely poised for the second leg.
