Ronnie O'Sullivan's Historic Quest Begins Against Chinese Debutant
Ronnie O'Sullivan will launch his pursuit of an unprecedented eighth World Snooker Championship title against Chinese debutant He Guoqiang, following the official draw for the prestigious tournament in Sheffield. The 50-year-old legend, currently tied with Stephen Hendry on seven world crowns, faces a fascinating first-round challenge at the Crucible Theatre.
O'Sullivan's Renewed Confidence and Form
O'Sullivan has recently expressed growing confidence in his game, suggesting he could surpass Hendry's record within the next three weeks. "I started playing alright a couple of weeks ago," O'Sullivan revealed after defeating John Higgins in an exhibition final in Ireland. "For three years, I have been very poor, pretty much every day. So I didn't think I'd ever have another day where I'd feel good. But the last month I've been feeling alright. It was nice to feel comfortable at the table."
The 'Rocket' could potentially face Higgins again on a grander stage, as the iconic 'class of '92' rivals are projected to meet in the second round. This would require Higgins to overcome two-time finalist Ali Carter in his opening match, while O'Sullivan must navigate past He Guoqiang in their scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon sessions.
He Guoqiang's Impressive Credentials
He Guoqiang, the 25-year-old Chinese cueman, presents a formidable challenge, having defeated O'Sullivan twice in their three previous encounters. Those victories came at the Championship League and English Open in 2024. He secured his Crucible debut by impressively beating world number 18 and reigning Northern Irish Open champion Jack Lisowski 10-5 in the final qualifying round.
He will be among a record 11 Chinese players competing at the Crucible this year, surpassing last year's previous high of 10. He is also one of four debutants, alongside Stan Moody, Liam Pullen, and Antoni Kowalski, representing a new generation emerging from the qualifying stages.
Other Notable First-Round Matchups
The draw features several captivating contests:
- Teenage sensation Stan Moody, who battled tonsillitis during qualifying, faces 2024 world champion and number three seed Kyren Wilson in a Monday morning start.
- Liam Pullen, aged 20, takes on 2025 Scottish Open champion Chris Wakelin.
- Antoni Kowalski, the first Polish player to reach the Crucible, meets three-time world champion Mark Williams, aged 51.

The full first-round draw showcases the global diversity of the sport, with players from China, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Australia, Poland, and Iran all represented. The stage is set for a thrilling championship as O'Sullivan's historic campaign begins against a debutant with a proven ability to challenge the snooker great.
