West Ham United manager Nuno Espírito Santo issued a heartfelt apology to the club's travelling supporters following what he described as an 'embarrassing' 3-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
A Day of Despair at Molineux
The Portuguese coach, who has now overseen just two victories in his 15 Premier League matches in charge, stated he could not recall a worse day in his footballing career. West Ham conceded three first-half goals to a Wolves side that started the day at the foot of the table and had yet to record a league win this season.
"I don't recall one day that I felt so bad on a football pitch like today," a despondent Nuno said post-match. "I have to apologise to the fans. For those that travelled, it was embarrassing. There's not much I can say other than we are sorry."
Relegation Fears Mount for Hammers
The comprehensive loss extends West Ham's winless run to nine matches and leaves them four points adrift of safety, with 17th-placed Nottingham Forest their next opponents on Tuesday. The statistics make for grim reading: Nuno has now gone 26 Premier League games without a clean sheet across his spells at Nottingham Forest and West Ham.
In a damning indictment of the performance, the Hammers failed to register a single shot on target against a Wolves defence that had not kept a clean sheet all campaign. Defender Konstantinos Mavropanos echoed his manager's sentiments, stating the team must take responsibility. "The only people who can change the situation is us," he said.
Nuno Vows to Fight On
Despite the crushing nature of the defeat, Nuno insisted he retains the desire to turn the club's fortunes around. When questioned about his future, he shifted focus to the collective challenge. "It's not about my future," he asserted. "It's about how we can get out of this situation... Now is the moment to reflect, to think, to speak among ourselves, to see if we are strong enough to solve it."
The defeat was compounded by an unwelcome piece of Premier League history, as Nuno became the first manager to lose against the team starting the day bottom of the table with two different clubs in the same season, having also lost 3-0 to West Ham while in charge of Nottingham Forest in August.
