Nuno Espírito Santo has apologised to West Ham United supporters after his side suffered a 3-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers, describing it as the worst day of his football career. The result leaves the Hammers winless in nine matches and four points adrift of safety in the Premier League relegation zone.
Speaking after the match, Nuno said: 'I don't recall one day that I felt so bad on a football pitch like today. I have to apologise to the fans. For those that travelled, it was embarrassing.' The former Wolves head coach added that the performance was 'not good enough' and that his team failed to register a single shot on target against a side that had previously not kept a clean sheet.
Despite the heavy defeat, Nuno insisted he has the desire to continue fighting to lift West Ham out of the relegation places. 'It's not about my future. It's about how we can get out of this situation, how we can improve and get the results that make us climb the table,' he said. The Portuguese manager has won only two of his 15 Premier League games in charge since replacing Graham Potter in September.
Defender Konstantinos Mavropanos backed his manager, stating: 'For him so far it's difficult, for the fans especially. I don't think this team deserve to be in this situation. The only people who can change the situation is us. We have to bounce back as quick as possible.' West Ham face Nottingham Forest on Tuesday in a crucial relegation six-pointer.
