Notts County secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Salford City in the League Two playoff final at Wembley Stadium on Monday, earning promotion to League One in front of a sun-drenched crowd.
First Half Dominance
The Magpies took control early, with Alassana Jatta opening the scoring in the 32nd minute after a superb pass from Dan Jones split the Salford defence. Jatta, who has been a standout performer all season, slotted calmly into the corner to give his side a deserved lead.
Just before half-time, Notts County doubled their advantage. A well-worked free-kick saw Jones deliver to the back post, where Aden Baldwin lifted the ball into the danger area for Lucas Ness to head home powerfully in the 45th minute. The goal came at a crucial time, leaving Salford with a mountain to climb.
Second Half Sealer
Salford attempted to rally after the break, introducing Fabio Borini and Stephen Humphrys to add experience, but Notts County remained resolute. The game was put beyond doubt in the 70th minute when Jones capped a fine individual performance, latching onto a cross from the right and smashing the ball into the corner to make it 3-0.
The victory was a testament to Notts County's quality throughout the season, with Jatta and Jones particularly impressive. For Salford, co-owner Gary Neville watched from the stands as his side fell short once again in their quest for League One football.
Notts County manager Stuart Maynard praised his team's composure in the heat, with temperatures reaching 33.5°C at nearby Heathrow, making it the hottest May day on record. Hydration breaks were implemented to ensure player safety.
The win means Notts County return to League One after a two-year absence, while Salford must regroup for another season in League Two.
