Gary Neville Warns Man United Against Appointing Carrick as Permanent Manager
Neville: Man United Should Not Make Carrick Permanent Manager

Gary Neville Urges Manchester United to Look Beyond Michael Carrick for Permanent Manager Role

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has publicly advised his old club against appointing Michael Carrick as their long-term manager, insisting that the Red Devils should instead target the best available candidate on the market. Carrick has been serving as the interim head coach at Old Trafford since January, following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Carrick's Impressive Interim Tenure at Old Trafford

Since taking over the managerial reins, Carrick has overseen a remarkable turnaround in form, with Manchester United winning five of their six Premier League matches and drawing the other. This surge has propelled the team up the table to fourth place, just three points behind Aston Villa in third. Notably, their fine run included back-to-back victories against title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal, showcasing their potential under Carrick's guidance.

Neville's Cautious Stance on Managerial Appointment

Despite the team's resurgence and growing calls from fans and pundits for Carrick to be given the job permanently, Neville remains unconvinced. Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football ahead of United's 1-0 win at Everton, he emphasized the need for the club to pursue a more established manager. 'I think Manchester United have to pursue another manager right now around the fact of you don't know how the results are going to go,' Neville stated.

He pointed out that recent developments, such as Thomas Tuchel re-signing with England, are narrowing the options for United, but this does not necessarily harm Carrick's chances. 'If he gets United into the Champions League there will be a lot of fever around that he should be appointed,' Neville acknowledged. However, he stressed that the club should aim for the highest-caliber manager available to minimize risk.

Learning from Past Managerial Mistakes

Neville referenced United's recent history with inexperienced managers, noting that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, another former player, initially did a good job but ultimately did not work out in the long term. 'They've had young and inexperienced managers in the last two picks which have not quite worked,' he explained. 'So I just feel removing as much risk as possible is the right option.'

He was quick to clarify that his stance is not a personal criticism of Carrick, whom he holds in high regard. 'I'm not against him being appointed, I love him to bits and think that he's done an incredible job so far,' Neville said. 'But people who know me will know that's not personal against Michael because I love him to bits. He's a great lad, a great player and someone who's doing a very good job as a coach now.'

As the season draws to a close, the debate over Manchester United's managerial future intensifies, with Carrick's interim success creating a compelling case for his permanent appointment, while Neville's cautionary advice highlights the club's need for strategic, risk-averse decision-making in their pursuit of long-term success.
